Happy New Year!

2008573876

All of us at Market Street Shoes would like like to extend you our warmest holiday greetings and wish you all a Happy New Year!  Thank you for your support throughout 2011, for helping make our move across the street successful, and for continuing to support a local small business and your local economy.

Stay tuned in the coming days of January for the relaunch of our website www.marketstreetshoes.com where you'll finally be able to purchase shoes online.  Yay!  We'd love to hear your feedback as we go along.  We will strive to make that experience as positive and engaging as your in-store experience.  We'll launch the site quietly with our core product offerings as we transition seasons, but many new styles, and some new brands, are slated to arrive in-store and online throughout January, February, and beyond.  We're very excited and can't wait to share the new site with you.

We should also point out our updated Winter hours for Friday and Saturday nights.  We'll be closing at 8 PM, just like the rest of week, in honor of Old Man Winter's need for a break from the 10 PM hoopla we carry on with the rest of the year.  Sunday maintains the same 6 PM closing, and we'll continue to open at 10 AM everyday.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Happy New Year!

Peanut Butter = 10% OFF

Happy Holidays!

Well, here we are, the last weekend before the winter Holidays begin, and we've got lots of great gift ideas for the loved ones on your list.

Shoes, of course, and slippers too, hats and scarves and coats for you, mounds of luscious socks and tights to keep your feet cozy day and night.

bags
Usually around the holidays we make some silly offers about wearing your favorite Christmas sweaters, or bringing in a plate of your favorite baked good, or the like, in exchange for a discount on your purchases.  But this year we would like to help our friends and neighbors in need over at the  Ballard Food Bank buy holding a peanut butter drive.  The cost of peanut butter has risen over 40% in the last couple of months, and as a shelf stable protein it plays an important role in the cupboards of those in need.

This weekend bring in a jar, or more, of peanut butter and take 10% off your purchases through Sunday the 18th.

We'll keep the goody tray full of delectables from our friends at Great Harvest, and the Joe from Cupcake Royale hot.

We look forward to seeing you in the store!

Art Walk this Saturday!

Join us this Saturday, November 12th, from 6-9 PM, as we host the photographic work of Terry Pratt .  Of his work Terry says,

"I am returning to Photography after 30 yrs away.
When I left it was all about D76, Tri-X film,
Polaroids, Darkrooms and Thermometers.
So glad I experienced that.
Now its all changed.

1966
In 1966 I saw the movie. BLOW-UP, an english film about a studio photographer.
I purchased a Kodak folding camera and started taking pictures.
Still in my teens, I met Northwest Photographer Mary Randlett, who is still taking
pictures and is an inspiration at the age of 86.

1980‘s
During this time period I worked for and with another Northwest Photographer,
Chuck Kuhn. I was introduced to the working side of Photography. I learned a lot
from Chuck . . . Let ‘r Buck

Hope you enjoy my work."

Shoe Rationing Ends Today

On this day in 1945, the US government lifted the ration on footwear enacted during World War II.

Early in February, 1943 a ration was placed on footwear made of leather.  Some exceptions were made shortly after ratoining began and exempted items such as huaraches, skate shoes and bathing slippers.

According to Donald Kolkman in "US Rationing during WWII",

"The shoe rationing program was a uniform coupon program. By the use of stamps having no
termination date, every individual was given the right to purchase a pair of shoes with each valid shoe
stamp contained in his Ration Book #3. Shoe stamps were validated periodically. War ration shoe
stamps were transferable between members of a family living together in the same household.

In cases of exceptional need, which if not satisfied would lead to hardship, Boards granted extra rations to consumers by giving them special shoe stamps. Members of the armed forces who applied to Local Boards for a shoe ration were referred to the nearest Army or Navy installation. The Board was not authorized to issue them a shoe ration except under circumstances of the most extreme hardship as specified in the instructions".

Tsubo - yup, that's a silent "T"

A fresh hit of Men's and Women's Tsubo have arrived.  Tsubo's current riffing on iconic silhouetes reigns supreme; from the classic men's cap-toe brogue, the Wexler, or the refined, cinematic classiness of the women's pump, the Dufay, to the 1940s Parisian fashion nod in the Cusus.  A date night out in any of these is sure to give you a tatse of red carpet cool.   Take a peek...

The Wexler, available in Brown and Black.

The Duffay, available in Claret, Slate, and Black.

The Cusus, available in Chocolate and Black.

Ballard Art Walk featuring Mark Banaag

Join us this Saturday, October 8th, from 6-9 PM, as we host the canvas and photographic work of Mark Banaag .  Of his work Mark says,

"In my opinion, the biggest influence anyone can have in life comes from their surroundings.
Influences of nature, city life, and urban culture are what I take and transfer in two ways: canvas
work and photography.

A city, skyline, and urban environment can radiate its own vibrance, atmosphere, and aesthetic.
Using spray paint and acrylic, I like to celebrate and transfer these sometimes overlooked
characteristics and emotions onto canvas. Whether it be a city of darkness, energy, chaos, or
uniformity, these are the characteristics that I feel define an urban environment and need to be
expressed.

A city is not just define by what it looks from the outside, but through feelings, emotions, and
occurrences from within. Through photography, I strive to take pictures of moments that can
leave an impression. Whether it is a simple elderly couple walking by showing the endurance of
life, the sun beaming through the cracks of urban sprawl, the unique and persistent methods to
everyday living, the beautiful architecture with nature, or simply the way someone can look at
you, they are simple things that define life. I try to spotlight on something that one might pass
everyday in their life without realizing its impact.

Emotions should be expressed and shared. They help give us a definition to our surroundings."

Well said, Mark.  We look forward to hosting Mark's work, and we look forward to seeing you at the show.
